If you’ve already experienced the iconic highlights of Iceland and find yourself craving something new - or if you have a little extra time to explore beyond the mainland - we recommend the Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar). The Westman Islands are full of natural wonders, rich history, and a vibrant local culture that will leave you eager for more.
Westman Islands Overview
This cluster of volcanic islands, just a 40-minute ferry ride from the southern coast, blend adventure, wildlife, and history. The main island, Heimaey, is home to around 4,300 residents and boasts the world’s largest puffin colony as well as frequent sightings of whales and seals. The islands’ dramatic volcanic landscape is shaped by the legendary 1973 Eldfell eruption that led to rebuilding atop cooled lava fields. For travelers seeking a fresh Icelandic experience, the Westman Islands offer a perfect mix of scenic beauty, wildlife encounters, and cultural experiences - ideal if you want to extend your trip or make a return visit to explore something new. Below are some of our favorite activities for our clients.
Eldheimar Volcano Museum
Step into history at this fascinating museum dedicated to the 1973 volcanic eruption that reshaped Heimaey. The centerpiece is a remarkably preserved home buried under lava, giving visitors a powerful glimpse into the lives forever changed by this event. The museum also showcases the Surtsey Island exhibition, detailing Iceland’s longest continuous volcanic eruption (1963-1967). The museum has interactive displays, allowing guests to dig through volcanic ash and see simulations of inside the volcano, making this a truly memorable and moving experience. The self-guided format lets you explore at your own pace, which is great for families and as a change from the outdoor exploring.
Rib Safari and Puffin Watching
For an adventure, hop aboard a RIB speedboat for a high-speed tour around the islands. Complete with protective clothing, float suit, and life jacket, feel the rush as you glide over waves, explore sea caves inaccessible by land, and get close to incredible wildlife the islands are known for- puffins, fulmars, gannets, and if you’re lucky, seals and whales. The incredible guides share stories about the islands’ nature and history, making this an adrenaline-fueled sightseeing experience you won’t forget.
Beluga Whale Sanctuary & Puffin Rescue
Visit the world’s first beluga whale sanctuary and get an up-close look at these gentle giants. Learn about the sanctuary’s mission, explore the native species aquarium, and visit the puffin hospital, where injured birds are cared for before being released back to the wild. This family-friendly experience combines education with heartwarming wildlife encounters. The center's emphasis is on education and rescue, so expect learning time, displays, and flexibility in seeing the animals. It's an incredible privilege to be amongst the care and rehab - but don't expect the animals to interact with you. This is a great stop for animal lovers, and a way to learn about how important they are to Iceland's biodiversity.
ATV Tour Around Eldfell Volcano
For an exciting adventure, take an ATV tour around the volcanic landscape of Heimaey. Drive along lava fields, visit Prestvik beach, and explore the interior of Eldfell volcano itself. It's a fantastic way to experience first hand the sweeping landscapes of Iceland. This easy-to-drive tour requires no prior experience and offers stunning views of the island’s dramatic coastline. While drivers need to hold a license, passengers can be 6 years or older, making this a fun family adventure.
Take a Private Tour or Go the Self-Guided Route
There are multiple ways to experience the Westman Islands. Gain insider knowledge with a private driving tour led by a local raised on Heimaey. This personalized experience brings the island’s history and nature to life. Alternatively, you can bring your car over on the ferry and drive or you can rent a bike and explore Heimaey at your own pace. Highlights include hiking up Eldfjall volcano, visiting the puffin colonies, and standing on Stórhöfði — one of Europe’s windiest spots. And don't miss Don’t miss the ruins of Herjólfsdalur, the home of the islands’ first settler.
