We plan a lot of incredible trips in Costa Rica and Mexicoand it’s always fun to see what happens next. Some clients fall in love and go back (we get it!), while others want that same feeling—just somewhere new. If you’ve loved that mix of relaxation, adventure, and culture — you might be looking for something similar, but a little less crowded and a bit more off the radar.

That’s where Belize and Guatemala come in.

They have that same tropical, laid-back vibe—but with a fresh perspective. Think beaches, vibrant marine life, lush rainforests, and fascinating ancient ruins - all wrapped into one trip. It’s the kind of experience that feels both relaxing and a little more adventurous—perfect if you’re ready to try somewhere new without giving up what you already love.

Belize as an Alternate to Mexico

Belize is a great alternative to Mexico for travelers looking for turquoise waters, laid-back beach towns, and unforgettable snorkeling. The Belize Barrier Reef—the second largest in the world—offers the chance to explore colorful coral and vibrant marine life.

If you prefer a more relaxed beach experience places like Placencia offer peaceful resorts, clear water, and soft sand.

Inland you'll find adventure through cave exploration, and ancient Mayan ruins, like Lubaantun or Nim Li Punit. Driving along the scenic Hummingbird Highway is part of the experience with stops at local cafes, markets, waterfalls, and national parks.

Activities like cave tubing at Jaguar Jaw, a subterranean system of limestone arches and caves where ancient Mayan rituals once took place, or visiting archaeological sites surrounded by dense jungle create a sense of discovery similar to Mexico’s Riviera Maya, but with a quieter more intimate feel.

Loved Costa Rica? Try Guatemala Next!

Guatemala offers many of the eco-adventures and natural beauty that draw travelers to Costa Rica, but with more dramatic landscapes (if you can believe that!) and deep rooted culture in ancient and modern Mayan culture.

Settle into Guatemala by exploring the charming colonial streets of Antigua, known for its colorful architecture, historic churches, and vibrant local markets.

For a longer stay, expand to the local villages to visit palaces in San Juan del Obispo, craft shops in San Pedro de Las Huertas, and the market of San Antonio de Aguas Calientes.

A must-visit is Lake Atitlán - once nominated for one of the seven wonders of the world. The lake provides breathtaking scenery surrounded by volcanoes and traditional Mayan villages, where you can take boat rides, browse artisan markets, hike the area, or simply relax and take in the views. Tikal National Park offers the opportunity to walk among towering ancient Mayan temples rising from the rainforest canopy.

With experiences that blend cultural immersion and natural beauty, Guatemala provides a great sense of adventure - from discovering archaeological sites to enjoying spectacular landscapes and meaningful connections with local traditions.

Start Planning

Both Belize and Guatemala provide the same appealing combination of beaches, jungle exploration, snorkeling, and meaningful cultural experiences that make Mexico and Costa Rica so popular. These destinations allow you to step slightly off the beaten path while still enjoying the comforts and activities you know and love. For those looking to try something new without sacrificing the experiences that make a tropical getaway so memorable, Belize and Guatemala offer a great alternative.
