When most travelers think of Iceland, they picture waterfalls, glaciers, and volcanic landscapes - but the country’s vibrant food scene is just as unforgettable. The land of fire and ice lives up to its adventurous name and is not for the faint of heart (or stomach!), as Iceland offers a unique blend of tradition and innovation on every plate. If your ideal vacation includes discovering flavors you’ve never tasted, swapping stories over slow-cooked meals, and sampling food that tells the story of a nation - then Iceland might surprise you in all the best ways. We've whipped up some of our favorite culinary and foodie experiences we love to book in Iceland.

Reykjavik Food Tour

Picture this: strolling cobblestone streets lined with cheerful buildings, ducking into cozy cafés and heritage-rich eateries, as you're guided through culinary experiences rooted in Icelandic culture. On this Reykjavik Food Lovers Tour, you’ll sample over 10 traditional dishes—some comforting, some adventurous—as your guide weaves in stories of Viking feasts, harsh winters, and culinary creativity born from necessity. The food and restaurant stops vary depending on the day and time, but you can be sure you will get a good mixture of traditional food. Either way, expect flavors like rich lamb stew, dark rye bread slathered with butter, and maybe even fermented shark. Come with an empty stomach, and be sure to leave with a full heart in this walking food tour of downtown Reykjavik.

Cooking Class

There’s something deeply satisfying about not just tasting—but creating—a meal rooted in a place’s heritage. In this intimate, hands-on cooking class in Reykjavik, you’ll work side-by-side with a local chef to prepare a gourmet three-course meal using Iceland’s freshest seasonal ingredients. Think wild lamb, dried fish, and hearty grains - all local and historical dishes. Before cooking, enjoy a tasting session that introduces you to the wild and wonderful world of Icelandic flavors. Then, don your apron, sip a glass of wine, and set off to create your own Icelandic masterpiece! The best part? Sitting down to enjoy the fruits of your labor, surrounded by fellow food lovers.

Exclusive Food and Wine Tour

For a more elevated and personalized experience, we love recommending a private food and wine tour with a local guide who doesn’t just show you the best bites in Reykjavik—they bring the city to life through food. You’ll be welcomed into a selection of restaurants favored by experts and locals, where each course is paired with thoughtfully chosen Icelandic beer or wine. Between courses, your guide will share insights into Reykjavik’s culture, people, and quirky local traditions. It’s the perfect blend of fine dining and friendly conversation, designed just for your group. This private experience really brings the intimacy of Iceland alive right at your dinner table!

Farm-to-Table Experience

We have two farm-to-table experiences we love. The first one is a perfect lunch stop, just off the Golden Circle - visiting Friðheimar, a tomato greenhouse farm - where the family-owned staff have learned to grow tomatoes year-round! Here, you will enjoy fresh dishes in the greenhouses all curated with tomatoes, learn about the horticulture to make your meal happen, and even visit the Little Tomato Shop - but save space for dessert!

Just down the road is Efstidalur, a working dairy farm that welcomes curious foodies for a rural tasting unlike any other. While cows lounge in the barn below, you’ll taste your way through locally made skyr, creamy feta, and dreamy house-churned ice cream—all served farm-fresh and with a side of sweeping Icelandic views. This sweet, down-to-earth experience will feel like dessert for the soul.
