Fun Family Activities In Madrid

There is so much to explore in Madrid - it's an incredibly welcoming community - especially for families with children or grandparents. The trick is finding something everyone can enjoy. Here we've compiled some easy-going favorites to enjoy.

A Walking Tour of Madrid

A walking tour is a great way to get acclimated to a new city, and we love to schedule one on arrival day. Your flight will arrive early in the morning, and a walking tour is the perfect thing to keep you moving to beat the jet lag (and while you wait for your hotel room to be ready). This tour will introduce you to highlights of Madrid. You'll walk through the Plaza Mayor - once the heart of Madrid and the main market in the 15th century - and Puerta del Sol (Gate of the Sun), and the point from which all roads in Madrid are measured. You'll see the famous statue of Cervantes, learn a bit about some of the famous literary figures who lived and worked in Madrid, and marvel at the outside of the pristine Royal Palace.

Tour the Royal Palace

We think a trip to Madrid also requires an up close and personal experence with royalty by touring inside the Royal Palace. Although not inhabited anymore (the royal family now chooses to live in a smaller palace), this massive palace is still used for special events and formal state receptions today. You and your family will be lead by your private guide through this royal residence. As you make your way through the state rooms, from the reception halls to the large dining room and the throne room you'll learn all about the history of the Spanish Royal family. Your guide will point out the most beautiful paintings, decorative objects, the impressive collection of Stradivarius string instruments, and the collection of armor. When the tour is complete, you'll be able to admire the view of Madrid from the panoramic terrace - a great shot for a family photo!

Explore Museums in Madrid

The interactive National Museum of Natural Sciences offers something for all ages. The museum highlights biodiversity and nature in and around the Mediterannean - perfect for anyone interested in sciences. For art lovers, the Museo Reina Sofía is home to Picasso’s iconic Guernica and other modern works that spark curiosity. There's even an activity add-on where your family can recreate the scene using Picasso's techniques! Lastly, train-loving kids (and adults!) will be in heaven at the Museo del Ferrocarril. This old train station turned museum showcases historic locomotives and offers interactive exhibits. Seasonally, they offer mini-train rides in the courtyard for a fun, hands-on experience.

Must-Visit Parks of Madrid

Together you can explore the Madrid Rio park, a modern riverside park that is a local favorite. It features multiple playgrounds (including a giant steel slide), bike rentals, splash fountains for hot days, and beautiful walking paths. It’s perfect for an active afternoon, a picnic lunch, or a relaxing sunset stroll. You can also opt for an active adventure with one of Madrid’s most iconic green spaces: Parque del Buen Retiro. Kids will love rowing a boat on the Grand Pond, chasing pigeons, and discovering hidden playgrounds. Don’t miss the enchanting Palacio de Cristal, a glass pavilion that often hosts art exhibitions.

Day Trip to Toledo

A short trip outside Madrid takes you to the medieval city of Toledo, where history feels alive around every corner - a great experience for young and old alike. For the more inquisitive, explore grand castles or the charming ancient Jewish quarter to learn about the town’s rich history and culture. Stop at a local café to enjoy marzipan or take a marzipan baking class to learn how locals make this sweet confection. For the adventurous family, zipline across the Tagus River with the longest zipline in Europe, offering incredible views of the city and river. This next one’s a bit intense, so it’s best suited for teens or older kids: the Museo de la Inquisición. This museum tells stories from Spain’s Inquisition history and showcases torture devices used during the time period. Is it a bit creepy? Yes - but also educational!
