The Azores archipelago, an autonomous region of Portugal, is comprised of nine distinct islands, each offering their own experiences for your next trip. Among them, São Miguel and Terceira stand out, each with their own charm. Understanding their differences can help you decide which islands are right for you.

São Miguel: The Green Island

São Miguel is the largest island in the Azores and is often referred to as "The Green Island" due to its lush landscapes. The dense green mountains, sandy black beaches, and sparkling blue lakes and oceanfront lends itself to gorgeous views, hikes, and outdoor activities. For active travelers - you can explore Sete Cidades, a massive volcanic crater housing twin lakes - one blue and one green - surrounded by walking trails and scenic viewpoints. Or try Lagoa do Fogo - a pristine crater lake offering hiking opportunities with panoramic views. Don't limit your exploration of the island, Sao Miguel's waters are great for whale and dolphin watching or even snorkeling the rugged coasts and islets.

If you're looking to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the island, the Furnas Valley is a perfect area to settle in, as it is known for its geothermal activity. Nestled in the Furnas Valley, you can also enjoy the award-winning Terra Nostra Park - home to gorgeous golf courses, lakes and beaches, botanical gardens, and majestic scenery. Head to the northern coast of the island to where Europe's only tea plantations are located to tour and sample local teas. For those looking to experience more of the culture of the island, head to Sao Miguel's capital, Ponta Delgada for a sense of historic charm.

Terceira: The Lilac Island

Terceira is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant festivals. Affectionately called "The Lilac Island" for the abundance of lilacs and hydrangeas, the island's landscape is a tapestry of green fields divided by stone walls, volcanic features, and coastal beauty. Its historical significance is evident in its well-preserved architecture and traditions. For example, Angra do Heroísmo, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a city full of Renaissance architecture, cobblestone streets, and a history dating back to the 15th century. If you're a history buff you'll want to visit Angra do Heroismo which has one of the best public libraries and archives in Portugal as well as a private art collection. Another highlight is exploring the grounds of the Fortress of São João Baptista, a 16th century fortress riddled with history and scenic views - and is the largest Spanish fortress ever built outside of Spain.

If you're looking to explore the natural beauty of the island, look no further than Algar do Carvão. Very few places in the world allow you to traverse inside a volcano, but Algar do Carvão is an ancient lava tube and volcanic chimney that visitors can explore. Due to a volcanic eruption that took place at Algar do Carvão 3,200 years ago, the structure is now perfect for hikes showcasing stunning stalactites and stalagmites. Last, enjoy the Biscoitos region, known for its natural swimming pools formed by volcanic rocks and also its wine culture - offering tastings of the Verdelho wines.

Final Notes on São Miguel and Terceira

  • Nature enthusiasts will love Sao Miguel, whereas culture seekers and history buffs lean towards Terceira, but both offer adventure and relaxation.

  • Azores Airlines and other carriers provide direct flights from major European and North American cities.

  • If you have the time to travel to both islands (or others in the Azores!), they are accessible to each other through inter-island flight and ferry networks.

  • The weather is best between June and October with the hottest months being July, August, and September. November to January is also pleasant but temperatures dip slightly. February through May tend to have more rain.
